One program under the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs uses nature to help heal the wounds of war. The Veterans Conservation Corps attempts to unite two different public goals. One is to help returning vets with PTSD and other issues. The other, to help the environment. Correspondent Tom Banse caught up with a group of recently discharged soldiers and sailors. They were hacking away at a hillside choked with brambles near Nisqually, Washington. RTS volunteers will join 64,000 other volunteers from 200 affiliates throughout the nation, completing approximately 3,000 projects in one day.
In 2009, RTS completed 25 projects with the support of over 800 volunteers. In April 2010, volunteers will complete roughly 30 projects with the help of 1,000 volunteers.
RTS welcomes several new sponsor groups to our event, including top sponsors Greenpoint Technologies (Kirkland, WA), Howard S. Wright (Seattle), and returning sponsor, Perkins Coie, LLP (Seattle). “Perkins Coie is happy to support RTS,” said Perkins Coie representative, John Edwards. “We always make someone's house more livable, and leave with a deep sense of accomplishment.”
Most notably, The Center for Spiritual Living (CSL) will celebrate its 14th year of partnership with RTS. In 2009, 70 volunteers from the CSL helped repair St. Francis House in the International District.
RTS looks forward to a very successful 2010 event! On April 17th members of the VCC and the public will gather at one of the largest remnant Oregon white-oak forests in Western Washington to help pull invasive English ivy. Volunteers will also help plant native shrubs in areas where the invasive Himalayan blackberry has been controlled. This work will help protect the rare oak ecosystem and the species that depend on it. The site protects habitat for the rare slender billed white-breasted nuthatch, a bird that is found mostly in oak forest and is known from only three locations in Washington. Several rare plant species are also protected on the site.

The mission of the VCC is to give veterans opportunities to work in habitat conservation projects. The VCC is administered by the Washington Department of Veterans Affairs and has partnered with hundreds of partners across Washington on similar restoration projects.

The DNR Natural Areas Program is the single largest conservator of native ecosystems, plant communities and habitat for rare species in Washington. Currently, the program protects more than 132,000 acres in 83 natural areas throughout the state.

For more information contact DNR natural areas manager Carlo Abbruzzese at (360) 575-5056, Doug Robberson at (360) 909-2999, Wade Enos (WSU - Vancouver) at (369) 487-9270, or Alex Strong (Clark College) at (503) 975-7318.

Veteran’s Take Dragons Head On

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_MK7peYXNhCY/S5qakr8Cq8I/AAAAAAAAALk/GNY4SP9rkZQ/s320/803288254_20100305-20100304_3856.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5447836654318562242" />

It is a brisk morning as Veterans congregate near the fire pit before the challenge begins, unaware of what is about to come. It will be a day of learning and adapting to new challenges presented; a day to learn about communication, trust, personal accountability, and leadership; a day to learn about you and other veterans as a community. The event took place at the Waterhouse Center in Monroe, WA. Amidst the trees, brush, and wildlife was a series of courses which were designed to challenge groups to work together, communicate, and lead one another to face their fears. Veterans from all branches of the military, volunteers who are personally connected to service members, and Vet Corps members participated in the challenges presented.
The River Task required all persons to cross a theoretical alligator infested river by swinging on a rope and all land on the same 3’x3’ platform on the same side. As if this isn’t a challenge in itself, they also had to carry across a full bucket of water without spilling a drop. Fourteen people are difficult to fit on a 3’x3’ platform, especially when they are swinging across on a rope. Leadership was apparent as individuals took charge of the situation to ensure each person arrived safely on the opposing side. Veterans on the platform would catch others and link arms to ensure nobody fell off. The military training and team work allowed the group to successfully complete the task quickly and efficiently.
The goal of the wire challenge was to have every person successfully walk across the wire and through obstacles without falling in less than thirty minutes. This required trust and concern for every other individual at all times. The focus was impeccable and the course was completed in fifteen minutes. This was characteristic of the Vet Corps program. Through the course it was important to move yourself forward, while still helping those behind you. The Vet Corps program is a group of veterans that assist fellow veterans with their transition into civilian life. The veterans work on moving their lives forward to becoming civilians, while having concern and providing help to others just beginning their transition.
Each challenge presented was designed to teach a valuable lesson that can be carried into everyday life. The Dragon Challenge was the biggest obstacle presented. Standing on a 50 foot high platform each member was strapped into cables one by one and asked to jump off and glide to the ground on a zip line through trees and the wilderness. The fear of letting go and jumping was described before-hand by the course leader as a metaphor for a dragon, whose name is fear, that must be accepted before it can be confronted and overcome. Jaime, an AmeriCorps member, stood at the top slowly confronting her fears with encouragement from others. After ten minutes of confronting the zip line, she was finally able to accept her personal dragon and leapt from the platform.
After a long day of challenges and working together the group debriefed on lessons learned. Veterans strengthened communication, leadership skills, and trust. Most importantly, veterans learned to move forward through their struggles and that they need to accept the obstacles before they can properly overcome the struggle at hand. Each veteran learned about their personal skills and how to apply the skills learned into everyday life. They understand where they are at with their transition, but will not forget to help other veterans along their path.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_MK7peYXNhCY/S5qakMqop7I/AAAAAAAAALc/0UKbzG7wKwE/s320/803289171_20100305-20100304_3901.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5447836645924054962" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MK7peYXNhCY/S5qaWWTUQeI/AAAAAAAAALU/ciEGZNvja8c/s320/20100305-20100304_3873.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5447836407992435170" />

~ Brianne Leimbach

Vet Corps Program Helps Veterans Overcome Nightmares

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 167px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MK7peYXNhCY/S41XZA7ckuI/AAAAAAAAALM/IFqgueLTDXE/s320/vcc.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5444103611818480354" />

The Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs has implemented a new program called Vet Corps. This program provides numerous benefits to veterans and their families from job searches to helping them sleep at night.
Green River Community College holds a Vet Connect meeting the first Wednesday of every month to get veterans together so they know they are not alone in their daily struggles; however, on February 3rd the Vet Connect meeting was anything but ordinary.
Licensed Psychologist Diane Nakamura spoke about Beverly Ann Dexter’s new method that could help veterans overcome PTSD driven nightmares. Simply stated, the method is called No More Nightmares. The program is not meant to work in one night, but is a practiced skill that can help change unsettling dreams into visions of success. She emphasized that there is no such thing as a bad dream and that dreams are not meant to be analyzed.
The planned dream intervention teaches veterans to stay asleep during the nightmare, but to learn how to create a bridge in their mind that will allow the dream to end successfully. The dream intervention does not have to be realistic, but could be anything from ordinary to magical. Each person is different and must learn what type of intervention works for them. The intervention is not meant to change the dream, but to continue in the desired manner. By writing down the dream or feelings from the dream and the intensity, veterans can then return to the same situation the following evening and continue with the story line that they control rather than being controlled by their mind and memories.
The speech hit home for every veteran in the room. She was able to connect with them and provide a new alternative that will eliminate one of their many daily struggles. This is one way that the Washington State Vet Corps program is helping many veterans and shows the potential to help more of those who have sacrificed so much for every American.

~Brianne Leimbach

PTSD's best friend, a service dog is helping veteran

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 159px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MK7peYXNhCY/S3sKi4EmsiI/AAAAAAAAALE/MDrMDoPQTJg/s320/guide%2520dog.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5438952569263534626" />

WENATCHEE -- Life has become calmer, safer and less stressful for Chris Goehner since he paired up with Pele.

Goehner, 25, a Wenatchee Valley native attending Central Washington University in Ellensburg, suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. It's something he picked up while serving two tours as a Navy corpsman attached to a Marine Corps emergency room unit in Iraq. He worked as a medic in Kuwait and Iraq in 2004 and 2005, before being diagnosed with PTSD and discharged in 2006.

Pele is his service dog. Since November, the two have become inseparable.

Goehner is one of only 21 Iraq War veterans suffering from PTSD who have been paired with service dogs since the military recently started a new program to try to help soldiers with the disorder.

Pele was trained for the program by an organization called Puppies Behind Bars. The nonprofit organization uses prison inmates to train service dogs in several New York regional prisons.

The military began tests in 2008 to see if the dogs could help PTSD victims.

Pele, a 20-month-old golden retriever/ Labrador retriever mix, accompanies Goehner to his classes, when he goes to the store or mall and when he goes out to dinner. Pele sleeps in his bedroom at night, guarding his rest from haunting nightmares of bomb attacks and shot and blown-up soldiers.

"Pele is my little Marine. He watches my back," said Goehner, referring to the Marines who offered him protection when he was working close to the battle in Iraq.

Since getting Pele, Goehner said he's slept better than he has in three years. He's been able to take a nap for the first time since leaving the military. He can go into a crowded place with less fear that he's going to be attacked or shot at. He's not as unnerved by loud noises that remind him of shellfire and isn't constantly filled with anger and ready for a fight.

Goehner can't say enough about how Pele has already changed his life.

"A lot of that anger I had has gone away. It had to. You have to use positive reinforcement with a dog. Anger doesn't work for him," he said.

Pele is a calming focus point when Goehner goes out in public places that previously made him nervous. By directing his attention to the dog, he said he can forget about the things he used to worry about.

And Pele does watch his back. It's one of more than 90 commands the dog has learned. He'll move in between anyone who tries to come up to his master.

Goehner credits Pele for vast and quick improvement with his insomnia, for helping him become more stable and responsible.

Rebecca Murch

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MK7peYXNhCY/S3sE2FIYwxI/AAAAAAAAAK8/VkOTUoIFC5I/s320/VA_Hospital.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5438946302116807442" />

Rebecca Murch with VetCorps-Americorps is serving at the VA Hospital in Seattle assisting a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor with patients/veterans.

Each week she meet with about 6-8 different veterans that are enrolled in the VA's Compensated Work Therapy program. These veterans have, or currently are, suffering from drug/alcohol addictions and/or mental health issues and find it hard to maintain or obtain employment. Many of the veterans have combat service either in Vietnam, Gulf War or our current conflict in Iraq/Afhanistan, and as a result suffer from PTSD, depression, etc. Again, which are obstacles that make it difficult for them to maintain or obtain employment.

She meets with the Veteran to assist them with developing a resume, teach them job searching strategies in today's job market, assist them with practicing for interviews, assist with applying for Federal jobs and teach some basic computer skills as needed to perform the before mentioned tasks.

Rebecca told me; "It has been very rewarding personally, as I tend to meet with a Veteran more than once, therefore I get to see them develope and be able to utilize the skills that I have taught them. Hopefully the skills that I am teaching them will help them to go on to have more productive and rewarding lives themselves. There will be a special link to the H&R Block product at www.militaryonesource.com; wait until that link is posted and use it to create your tax account. A simple interview process will walk you through the return process, allowing complete electronic filing of federal and up to three state tax filings electronically.
Military OneSource notes the following on its Web site: “Do not go to the public H&R Block Web site to create a user account. If you create your account on the H&R Block Web site instead of through the Military OneSource site, the H&R Block system will treat your account as a public account. This means that you will receive the public version of the product instead of the customized Military OneSource product. The public version of H&R Block At Home® is not the same as the customized Military OneSource product, and it is not free. If you create an account through the H&R Block Web site, the H&R Block system will treat your account as a public account even if you access the account in the future through the Military OneSource site. To avoid this problem, please wait until the link is posted to the Military OneSource site.”

Tax consultations by phone will also be offered for free at 1-800-342-9647. And Military OneSource has a variety of educational materials that may be accessed by going to its Web site, clicking on “Find Information,” and then clicking on “Money Management.”
BBB Military Line will have more tax information in its February newsletter. Don’t forget that most military installations provide a Tax Center where you can have your taxes prepared for free by an IRS-trained volunteer!

1/13/2010
Scholarships Available for Spouses of Wounded or Fallen Service Members Applications accepted online through January 31
The National Military Family Association is now accepting applications for its Joanne Holbrook Patton Military Spouse Scholarship Program for spouses of wounded or fallen service members. They receive funding through various agencies of the Federal Government, Washington State, and other groups. They offer mostly free services to those who need them. There are some small fees for some services. They offer the kind of help that you can’t get from the VA, or Family Service/Readiness Center.
They are located in Bremerton, WA. They work with you over the phone, e-mail, and regular mail. I called them this morning because I needed help, and felt like the sky was falling. I asked a lot of straight questions, and receive very good answers. Although the letter is light on details, one thing is clear, those of us who received the “cash advance” on our GI Bill payments will soon begin paying VA back as the VA begins “recovering” the advance payments.

The letter is posted here in its entirety.

VA Letter:

WASHINGTON - The Department of Veterans Affairs is beginning the process of recovering advance payments made available during the fall 2009 semester to Veterans and service members who applied for education benefits.

“The advance payments were a huge success and helped thousands of student Veterans during the first days of the historic Post-9/11 GI Bill focus on studies and not their finances,” said Keith Wilson, Director of Education Services at VA. “Now, we can get to the business of closing the books on advance payments and focus on supporting Veterans for the spring semester.”

VA will begin sending out notification letters this week explaining the repayment process.

In October VA instituted an advanced payment process for all eligible students who were currently enrolled in an institution of higher learning for the fall 2009 term to ensure that all Veterans and eligible students were able to focus on their academic studies and not be burdened with financial concerns. As part of that process, a web portal was established to allow electronic submission for advance payment. Advance payments were also made on-site at VA offices around the country. At that time student Veterans were told that advance payments would be deducted from future benefit payments.

In collaboration with the Department of Defense, VA will also notify active duty service members who may have mistakenly applied for the advance payment of their options for returning un-cashed checks or reimbursing deposited funds.

VA discontinued advance payments via the website portal following the conclusion of the fall 2009 semester. VA is currently processing approximately 7,000 education benefits daily, up from an average of 2,000 at the beginning of the fall 2009 term. As of January 22 the Department has processed more than 105,000 of the approximately 132,000 spring enrollments received. Since the inception of the historic new program last year, VA has paid out more than $1.3 billion in education benefits, and opened the door to higher education to more than 183,000 Veteran students.

Veterans Conservation Corps

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 92px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MK7peYXNhCY/S2HOFipugLI/AAAAAAAAAKs/mrJxDBHwxQ4/s320/handshake-shirt-edited.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431849220182016178" />

Veterans Conservation Corps in Washington State...Therapeutic Transition, Green Job Training and Valuable Conservation

Veterans Conservation Corps is sprouting in Washington state and being developed for expansion to additional states. Attorneys for the veterans estimate
that millions could be paid to veterans under the agreement, with some
veterans receiving hundreds or more dollars in increased monthly
benefits.

The National Veterans Legal Services Program was to discuss the suit at
a press conference Monday.

Former Army Sgt. Juan Perez, 36, of Owosso, Mich., said the resolution
of the suit filed in 2008 in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims was a
relief. Perez, a father of five who did two tours in Iraq, said he
struggles with migraine headaches and an eye injury related to a head
injury sustained in Baghdad. He also has nightmares and takes medication
for his mood related to PTSD.

Since he left the military, he said he and his wife were laid off from
their jobs and declared bankruptcy, in part because of medical bills
from the birth of his two youngest kids.

"I'm glad that they are finally moving forward and reevaluating the
soldiers that need to be reevaluated and doing the right thing," Perez
said. "It's been kind of a struggle not only for myself but a lot of
individuals that didn't get what they were supposed to get in the first
place."

PTSD is an anxiety disorder that can develop after a terrifying event
where the person was physically harmed or felt threatened. Symptoms
range from flashbacks to problem drinking.

The lawsuit addresses the issue of the disability rating given by the
military to veterans discharged with PTSD. Each of the seven plaintiffs
was given a rating of 10 percent or less.

The law requires the military to assign a disability rating of at least
50 percent to those discharged for PTSD, said Bart Stichman,
co-executive director the National Veterans Legal Services Program, a
nonprofit organization that represents the veterans. Since October 2008,
the military has given the 50 percent rating to those discharged with
PTSD, Stichman said.

The higher rating ensures that the veteran receives lifelong monthly
disability payments, free health care for the veteran and the veteran's
spouse, as well as health care for the veteran's minor children.

If a veteran qualifies for a higher disability rating, they may receive
back pay as well as reimbursement for health care expenses.
Classification:  UNCLASSIFIED

Clover Park Tech

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 247px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MK7peYXNhCY/S18wMJJA_ZI/AAAAAAAAAKY/dsOlqO3iyko/s320/Adjusting+to+College+Ad.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431112660802403730" />

Announcement for Outreach to Minority and Women Veterans Project

The King County Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS) is pleased to announce the release of an RFP for its Outreach to Minority and Women Veterans Project. DCHS is accepting proposals from agencies to provide outreach services to connect minority and women veterans to veterans’ benefits, services and other resources in a culturally appropriate manner. The purpose of this project will be to locate, identify, engage and refer minority and women veterans and their families, to veterans benefits, services and resources, and other regional housing, health and human services available to them, providing advocacy and follow-up as needed. Agencies will be expected to develop or expand their knowledge of issues facing veterans and their families; to retain and report performance measures; and to follow-up with clients once a referral has been made.
Dependable Strengths (DS) was created by Bernard Haldane who worked extensively to help military personnel back in 1945 transition from military to civilian life. The Dependable Strengths Articulation Process has since become part of the alumni placement process for the Harvard Business School and has been taught around the world in China, South Africa, South Korea, Japan, and England with college and university students, k-12 system, prisons and prisoners, major corporations and employees, unemployed workers and the list goes on. Haldane, now deceased, has a quote that best summarizes the work:

“Because you’re unique, there’s something you are better at than anybody else. You have a unique pattern of Dependable Strengths…when you know the core skills of your pattern, you have power over how they are developed, combined, and applied. Then you gain job security, resilience, employability, focused energy, new possibilities and more.”

While the training typically occurs over a 2 day period, this training consists of an initial four hour session followed by another if participants want one one. The cost is usually around $750 for the full training and the trainers also bill something like $600/day. The DS crew wants to honor the service of our vets and this training is at no cost to them. So far there are 10 enrolled for the class with a maximum of 20.

All those interested should contact Peter Schmidt at peter.schmidt@edcc.edu

XEROX IS DOING SOMETHING COOL

If you go to this web site, www.LetsSayThanks.com you can pick out a thank you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently serving in Iraq . You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to a member of the armed services. How AMAZING it would be if we could get everyone we know to send one!!! It is FREE and it only takes a second. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of these? Whether you are for or against the war, our soldiers over there need to know we are behind them. This takes just 10 seconds and it's a wonderful way to say thank you. Please take the time and please take the time to pass it on for others to do. We can never say enough thank you's. But this year, Disney Parks is celebrating the good things people do for their communities. In 2010, Disney wants to inspire one million people to volunteer a day of service to a participating organization in their communities and in exchange for their service they will receive a free one-day admission to a theme park at Disneyland® Resort or Walt Disney World® Resort. Starting January 1, 2010, go to www.disneyparks.com to search for volunteer opportunities; many will be projects that entire families can participate in together.

If you have any questions about participating in this campaign, please refer to the resources provided at http://www.disneyparks.com. The Outward Bound program for Veterans provides an opportunity for camaraderie and has proven to be a powerful tool helping veterans readjust after leaving the combat zone.

Through generous funding by the Military Family Outdoor Initiative Project, a joint partnership of The Sierra Club and The Sierra Club Foundation, The Anschutz Family Foundation, and The Disabled American Veterans we are offering fully underwritten Outward Bound programs to Veterans. This is a tremendous opportunity for adventure and self-discovery to our veterans of combat operations in Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom) and Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom). We have over 20 years serving our nation's combat veterans through a long partnership with the Disabled American Veterans organization, where we have offered enriching wilderness expeditions specifically designed for war veterans at no cost to the participants.

Our newest programs offer numerous wilderness adventures exclusively for war veterans, and are fully funded for all participants, to include their roundtrip stateside travel costs between home and the excursion site. The idea originated with previous Club Vet president Timm Lovitt, who graduated from EdCC and currently attends Seattle University. A dedication ceremony held Nov. 5 in Brier Hall featured guest speaker Michael Reagan, a Perrinville resident and Vietnam veteran who has drawn portraits of more than 1,900 members of the armed forces who have died in recent conflicts.

The monument, “From Boots to Books,” is located on a hilly green space west of Brier Hall. Artist Roger Robert Wheeler of the Fremont Fine Arts Foundry of Seattle is working on the final piece, a bronze sculpture of a pair of boots stacked on a pile of books. A wax prototype currently sits on top of the stone base. The base, worth $2,000, was donated by Michael Homchick Stoneworks of Kenmore. Homchick's father was a World War II veteran.

Montgomery, who joined Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8870 in Lynnwood after completing his service, gave presentations to various veterans groups in the area to raise funds for the monument. About $3,000 was raised to finance the building of the monument, which will cost about $5,000 total to build. Some college employees, including the American Federation of Teachers #4254 in Edmonds, also donated.

Meanwhile, Club Vet continues to support veterans from all walks of life. Hossam Basha, a Fulbright exchange student from Egypt and member of the Egyptian military, was among those on hand for the ceremony.

Martin Spani, a Marine who served during the Cuban missile crisis and Vietnam, also came to support the cause. Spani has taken fire science, first aid and CPR classes at Edmonds. Spani's VFW Post added 22 new members this year.

“It's a great program,” Spani said after the ceremony. “It's great to see the vets are getting some recognition from the college.”

West Central Spokane Graffiti Abatement - October 24th

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404783318085787282" style="DISPLAY: block;
